not feeling so hot

I feel all sore tonight. It had been getting worse and worse through the weekend. I thought it was maybe the way I was sleeping or hurling myself through my window last week, but it may be the onset of some flu....... great. My throat is itchy and my ears kind of pop when I swallow. I need a doctor to read my blog.

CNN.com - Police: Parents gave crying baby vodka - Nov 29, 2005

CNN.com - Police: Parents gave crying baby vodka - Nov 29, 2005: "According to a police report, the parents told officers that for about a month they had fed their daughter a bottle filled with a mixture of water, sugar and vodka to help her sleep.
Small quantities of alcohol have historically been used to quiet crying babies, but authorities said the amount fed to Makeisha was extreme.
The Broward County Medical Examiner's Office determined that the infant had a blood alcohol level of 0.47 percent. The legal limit for drivers in Florida is 0.08 percent.
Former Medical Examiner Dr. Ronald Wright said that for a baby to ingest that much alcohol would be the equivalent of a 160-pound adult drinking 18 beers."

johnny's obsession with a magical place

It is true. I do like disney world. I've been 5 seperate times. 1990, 1999, 2003 (twice) and 2004. It is a cool place. Going anytime besides January is usually not a good idea, however. The lines are incredible, 1-2 hours for the good rides. Oh, and by "good ride" I mean one installed after 1991. So much of the park has not changed since it opened 30 or so years ago. All the stereotypes are still alive and well in the World Showcase in Epcot.

Tonight for dinner I had steak, mashed potatoes, garlic bread and spinach. I made dinner with Tammy because she doesn't know how to cook steak... or anything apparently.

I'm watching the freakiest show on HBO about sex around the world. I can't describe it, it is just too wierd.

Some good movies you need to see (with me):

Young Frankenstein
Christmas Vacation

Office Space
Super Troopers
Dr Strangelove
Tommy Boy
Ace Ventura
Billy Madison

I'm appalled Michelle has never seen Scrooged. RENT IT NOW.

great day

What I meant to say earlier was that LESS pressure = FASTER boiling.

Wow, I am so glad I cleared that up (sarcasm). I know there are some science snobs reading this.

So my readership is hovering around 9. I see the mass-marketing, tv ads, ticket-tape parade and radio annoucements really paid off. Next month, maybe I will have a bikini car wash.

Sunday, November 27, 2005

Oh one more thing....

I am lacking something witty...

Well, ok, not so witty. I watched The Deep and what I liked the most was this underwater lake they filmed. It is dense, brine water surrounded by shells and resembles a sea shore. The brime even seems to lap up aginst the shells, just like waves.

Also, since there is little organic matter so far down, the water is crystal clear. And cold, like 33-35'F. There are also openings in the sea floor that turn the water into steam. However, since it is so far down and the all the enormous pressure, the water doesn't steam until 400'F, unlike normal boiling point which is 212'F.

FYI, the greater the pressure, the less time it takes to boil water - whether it be air or water pressure. This does not mean the water will be HOT, though. For example, water on Mars (signifigantly less pressure than Earth) would boil at 50'F.

headache

It might be the caffeine deficiency.

I am going to get back on my water quest this week. It kind of strayed to diet coke by the end of the week. Coke in a bottle tastes different than coke from a can. I decided to use my nalgene as a spare change collector. How trendy!

I had a one wonderful and one wierd conversation tonight with women. I am in the middle of doing all my laundry. I just cleaned out my car. And my room is still clean. What a great life.

Last day of vacation

Well, it finally happened. It's Sunday.

I was marginally productive yesterday. Here is a quick run down:
Dismantled desk and brought it to the basement
Removed 2 computers
swept room
vacuummed rug
reponsitioned bed
made bed
hung up Beatles print
moved cable modem, router and computer to living room
brought all the books upstairs
fixed bookcase
brought dirty clothes downstairs
brought dvds up

Who's that?

Does it look like me?
It's my grandfather... circa 1963.

dum dum dum!

My room is amazing now! I brought up all my books and stuffed them into one bookshelf. I also got rid of my desk and chair and the two other computers in my room. Now its just a bed, boookcase, dvds, stereo, coat rack. All it took was several hours and a broom (and me).

OKCupid! The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test

Pure Geek
47 % Nerd, 56% Geek, 21% Dork
For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Geek, earning you the title of: Pure Geek.

It's not that you're a school junkie, like the nerd, and you don't really stand out in a crowd, like the dork, you just have some interests that aren't quite mainstream. Perhaps it's anime, perhaps it's computers, perhaps it's bottlecaps, perhaps it's all of those and more. Your interests take you to events and gatherings that are filled with people you find unusual and beyond-the-pale, but you don't quite consider yourself 'of that crowd.' Instead, you consider yourself to be fairly normal.

Which, you are.

So I did it again.

Spent three days avoiding Emilie only to have it blow up in my face.

Everyone thinks I am crazy for talking to her but I have long pushed that noise aside. I still think there is hope but perhaps I am thinking of the situation all wrong. Well, it's at least not on the same level as Em. She has some plan in her head for us and the details/timeline of said plan are locked away in her head. Well, at least this is my understanding. So, this puts me in a sort of wierd limbo. Borderline humiliated by my own emotions and innability to fully let go. Anyway, just thought I'd share. It may boil down to OK, let's see if Jon does something spectacular with his life. Well, that is already starting to happen. I would imagine everyone agrees change happens slowly.

Anyway, I want people to chime in.... anonymously, of course.

Edward R. Murrow, See it Now (CBS-TV, March 9, 1954)

Edward R. Murrow, See it Now (CBS-TV, March 9, 1954):

"No one familiar with the history of this country can deny that congressional committees are useful. It is necessary to investigate before legislating, but the line between investigating and persecuting is a very fine one and the junior Senator from Wisconsin has stepped over it repeatedly. His primary achievement has been in confusing the public mind, as between internal and the external threats of Communism. We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law. We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men -- not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend causes that were, for the moment, unpopular.

This is no time for men who oppose Senator McCarthy's methods to keep silent, or for those who approve. We can deny our heritage and our history, but we cannot escape responsibility for the result. There is no way for a citizen of a republic to abdicate his responsibilities. As a nation we have come into our full inheritance at a tender age. We proclaim ourselves, as indeed we are, the defenders of freedom, wherever it continues to exist in the world, but we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.

The actions of the junior Senator from Wisconsin have caused alarm and dismay amongst our allies abroad, and given considerable comfort to our enemies. And whose fault is that? Not really his. He didn't create this situation of fear; he merely exploited it -- and rather successfully. Cassius was right. 'The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.'

Good night, and Good Luck."

Sit quietly, doing nothing, spring comes, and the grass grows by itself.

Dr Strangelove or:
How I Stopped Worrying and Love the Bomb
I just watched this last night. I've seen it a few years ago but I have a new-found love for classic, funny movies. The movie boils down to this: a nuclear attack has been initiated upon Russia by a rogue US General. His goal is for the US not to be able to recind the order and bring back the bombers, putting the President in the akward position of having to embrace the situation and wipe Russia off the map. The consequences would be a cripped Russia could retaliate and destroy the United States. Hillarity ensues. Petter Sellers stars and is three different characters n the film. George C. Scott also stars as a commy-phobic General.

sunday morning sidewalk

It's snowing like crazy and almost feels more like Christmas than Thanksgiving. I checked out the "crazy" deals at Wal-Mart and indeed they are insane. A 42" Plasma tv for $999, TVs for $99, Laptops for under $400. Portable DVD players for $50. DVD recorders for TV for $60.

Best Buy comes in a distant 3rd or 4th with their deals. Plus most of them have mail-in rebates, which suck.

Target.com let's you choose a wake-up call so you don't miss getting up at 5am. It also can let you schedule a "time to go to bed" call for tonight. It's smart for capitalism but lame for the human race.

career

I had lunch with my boss today. We discussed a client but we also discussed my apparent lack of enthusiam in my job. He hinted that there was room to grow in our company and that I sometimes vary from spectacular to mediocre. He sounded quite serious of some kind of management position, on the same level as our current middle manager. I gave him my ideas.

I had to dash to a client's for a conference call and a meeting. It was quite productive.

I was supposed to get out early, but I volunteered for last-minute appt. It was quick and easy. I also had to volunteer for being on-call, basically, for the next four days.

"Oh, and next Friday... is Hawaiian shirt day... so, you know, if you want to you can go ahead and wear a Hawaiian shirt and jeans."

Thanksgiving-eve

I just broke into my house. Usually there is either someone home or a door unlocked. No suck luck. I used a box and a milk crate to get high enough to my window and then threw myself inside. I only landed on my coat rack.

So my night will be spent in a nice empty house.

Oh and another thing, do not wrap meat destined for the freezer in aluminum foil!! it just sticks to the meat and means the microwave is not an option for defrosting. My dinner is currently trying to reach a boil on the stove.

Time is relentless....

So, my blog went on a diet. I am limited to how many pictures I can keep up there. Plus, it was kind of ridiculous to post those pictures. A little too many reminders.

On a side note, my life is great. I have been feeling wonderful for the past week. "Depression" is not part of my vocabulary anymore. My parents seem to like me again. And my finances are finally, finally, finally under some sort of control. I have only dreamed of this day. I am actively searching for a new job. Something with a little more job growth.

I finished the book Angels and Demons. I loved it. Dan Brown is a great author. It has so many twists and is actually mind-blowing that so much of the novel is based on facts. Some interesting similarities:

Robert Langdon is awoken out of a sleep.... to help solve a murder.... hindered by a gruff, slightly suspicious police officer.... aided by a beautiful woman who is somehow related to the deceased... to find a killer who, in turn, is linked to a secret society. Actually, I cant remember how da vinci code ended. Someone enlighten me.

I also figured out my direct deposit. Instead of one account, it will now be split up between three, two are Bank of America and one ING. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Some things

So, I decided to change my diet a little. Michelle has been bugging me about diet coke and it's dire effects. I decided to do something about it.

Today, I've had about 7 glasses of water and only a few sips of soda.

Oh, and I decided today to cut out a little bit of the sugar as well.

No candy or delicious cookies. Ok, well I had a bologna sandwich for lunch. But I was desperate and it was with mustard on wheat bread!

I went to the grocery store after work. I got steak, spinach, sharp chedder cheese, eggs and sugar free Jello pudding.

It was a great dinner and two Jello puddings later, I am craving a piece of toast.

Baby steps.

Completely random thoughts

There is love and then there is everything else.

Time can only make problems worse.

I told you it was random:

I am currently trying to learn about antimatter and it's practical benefits.

"Antimatter is matter that is composed of the antiparticles of those that constitute normal matter. If a particle and its antiparticle come in contact with each other, the two annihilate and produce a burst of energy, which results in the production of other particles and antiparticles or electromagnetic radiation. In these reactions, rest mass is not conserved, although (as in any other reaction) energy (E=mc²) is conserved." --from Wikipedia

Successful failure

So my day started great. It was 65, sunny and Noho was indeed bumping. I drove back home to Woodstock only to find no birthday party. It was more funny than wierd my parent's would forget my birthday was this week. We decided next weekend would be better for a party, anyway.

If I can't find a birthday date for Tuesday, Emilie has graciously agreed to take me out. I have a feeling, though, it will be OK. Between Kurt and Mary Alice and Tam, someone will take care of me.

To steal a little from Colleen's blog:

Current Mood: Perplexed, happy, full (of carrots, hummus and diet coke) and wicked tired.

Crossroads

My birthday is coming up in 2 days. Along with Mary Alice... Chris... Amanda too, I almost forgot. Her birthday is the 14th. Happy Birthday, Amanda!!

The night was filled with what seemed to be an infinite amount of sushi. Sake was offered. Sake was drunk. Kurt flirted with the manager of the Tea Pot and she flirted right back. Afterwards, at the Tunnel Bar with Bryson and Kurt, we meet one of Bryson's friends, Jen or Jess or something. Bryson likes her but she totally blows him off. Kurt decided to tell us a litany of freaky stories involving past girlfriends. Really, really freaky stories.

The night ended at Hugo's Bar, a dive on Pleasant St and then at Ye Ol' Watering Hole until 2am. Kurt met some girl named Paula and got her number. Bryson struck out with his friend. And I drove everyone home safely after consuming only 1.5 beers. My poor stomach was starting to rebel against me.

Stupid Saturday

What a waste of a day. I have been getting sick for the past 15 hours. I haven't been this sick is a good long while. Usually after a while, water and crackers start to do their job. But I have not been able to keep down anything, including aspirin.

Since I am going through a "just got sick, feel fine for the next few minutes" spurt, I decdided to throw out a quick update.

So I am little bogged down with this project for work. I need to come up with a solution for a client involving a CRM program - used for tracking customers. They have very specific needs and it appears the only solution available is only for Macs. This makes things difficult for us because: 1) I would be seriously cut out of the loop for this client if they switched over to Macs 2) requires them to purchase 3 new Mac workstations, besides a server, 3) sigifigant learning curve for current and future employees. But, the contact person at this company leans towards Macs so it might not be that hard of a sell.

By the way, their specific need from the program is to link contacts via relationships. Know that Customer x was referred by Investor y, etc. that Investor y's office manager is person z and that person z was once worked for customer x.

So Match.com membership will be ending soon. I already chose not to renew. It is quite expensive and no exactly what I need at the moment.

My TLC crackers from Trader Joes are so good and probably good for me. However, what I need at the moment is an IV drip. Or some ginger ale.

Oh, and completely crazy: Mary Alice (roomate), Chris (Kurt's friend whom I met freshman year of college as well) and I ALL have the same birthday! Chris is a year older but Mary A-rod and me are exactly the same. It's more of a freaky coincedence for Kurt, since he is the common link for all of us.

Spotless mind wannabe.

I don't know how many times I have to be told NO before it sticks. Tonight might have done it.

I guess I can't get discouraged and start making other plans...

Perhaps spend some time and reflect on my appealing and wonderful attributes...

And move on.

Quiet night

My night is basically over. Work is over. Dinner was quick and good and on the healthy side. I reallly want to see the movie Good Night... And Good Luck. It's about Edward R. Murrow's attempt to bring down Joseph McCarthy's "obsession with cleansing America of all potential subverivies". It's a true story and about a time of American history that I don't know a heck of a lot about. George Clooney directed and stars in it as well. I'll let you know how it goes.

I might just rent a movie tonight. Online, of course. Blockbuster is so 1998.

A lot of defective condoms in February, apparently.

November is an extremely busy month for birthdays between friends and family. Just a short list:
Me, Kurt, Mary Alice, Brady, Noah, Jackson, Aunt Darlene and Corey.

At Jackson's birthday party, I had to remind my family my birthday was coming up. They were asking If I could come home in a week for Noah's party. I said, why not, it's my birthday too!

Once Thanksgiving is over, the Christmas season will swing into full force. Not that it hasn't already shown life. Most stores had Christmas decorations out before Halloween was over. On Saturday, one of the warmest days of late Fall, the local Northampton Wal-Mart was playing Christmas music. Go figure.

Couldn't Resist....

The kind of day it has been

My life can be described as on-track currently. I am trying to invent myself, not find myself. My purpose does not exist somewhere in the universe waiting to be found, like some galactic hide-and-go-seek. No, it arrives piecemeal, day by day. I just need the wisdom to accept it or reject it.

But, I must say this: life was not meant to be lived alone. Family is great. Family is God's built-in mechanism so your life does not start out alone. Friends are better. The more friends you have, the more you are loved you feel - and the more you can spread those feeling around. If one spoke breaks down, another friend can take it's place.

A great love, I believe, is the key to life. Love allows you to filter out the day to day and allows you to find happiness. A great love compliments a great life.

This was totally random.

Jackson had a great birthday. He walks all over the place and now is not so chubby because of it. Everyone was happy to see me as well. I met Becky's boyfriend Mike. He seems perfectly normal and adores Becky. I would say the party was a smashing success.

Birthday!

Jackson loved his Muppet Show DVD. At least, he gnawed on the packing for a few minutes - which is usually a good signal.

B-Day plus one

B stands for blog, not birthday. This is my second post so I wanted to be creative with the title.

Today is raining which is not what I wanted to see when I got up. Last night was spent alone, which was awesome. Combined with the awesome but brief weather, I felt a little more productive than usual.

After raking the driveway and a good chunk of the backyard, I decided to make some lunch. And then got the urge to register jonparent.com... again. This time I vowed to do something semi-coool with it, so here I am!

I also rented the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy via MovieLink.com. It took no time to download and plays just like a DVD. It as OK, quirky movie. It dealt a lot with probabilities and answering those deep questions everyone has through life - like why we are here. According to the movie, the answer to "everything" is "42".

Happy Birthday Jackson! JJP=1 today.

First Post Ever!

Well, here it is.

It started like any other Saturday in November.

The mercury hit near or at 70'F today. I couldn't resist the temptation to wear shorts, even if it was for a little while. Home alone, I decided it was time to do something about the leaves accumulating in Kurt's yard. So I purchased a rake and a tarp at the local hardware store - not WalMart!

I also was busy deciding on a birthday present for Jackson. Ever concerned about the crap he will be bombared with on TV once he has the attention span to sit and watch TV, I purchased the Muppet Show Season 1 on DVD for him. I didn't put too much effort into the card... he can't read.

Things that suck today:
